Pillar II · Framing Workshop

Inside the framing workshop — hand-joined hardwood mouldings, museum glass, and 4-day lead times on standard editions.

Every framed piece leaves our Rochester workshop built by one of nine master framers — none with fewer than 14 years on the bench, several approaching three decades. We do not contract out finishing.

  • Mouldings. Hand-cut, mitred, and spline-joined from FSC-certified maple, walnut, and white oak. No metal, no plastic, no MDF.
  • Glazing. Conservation Clear or Optium Museum Acrylic with 99% UV filtration. Both supplied by Tru Vue and glazed in a clean-room bay.
  • Matting. 8-ply 100% cotton rag board, hand-cut to a 1/32″ tolerance. Reversible mounting on all editions.
  • Hardware. Pre-strung D-rings, archival bumpers, and a level already in the box. Hang-ready out of the crate.
  • Lead time. 4 business days on standard editions, 8 days on oversized work (over 40″ in either dimension), 12 days on conservation deep-set frames.
  • Delivery. Free white-glove delivery on framed editions over $1,200 across all 50 U.S. states.

How should we prepare files for the largest color match?
Send 16-bit AdobeRGB or ProPhotoRGB TIFFs, flattened, with no sharpening and no embedded profile conversion. We apply a per-paper ICC profile from our 12-color pigment library and send a soft proof for sign-off before any edition is run. RAW files are accepted on request and profiled in-house.
Which ICC profiles do you support, and can we soft-proof?
We ship profiles for every paper in our catalog — Hahnemühle Photo Rag, Canson Platine, Epson Legacy Fibre, and seven more. A reference soft-proof is delivered as a 1200 px JPEG with an embedded profile, viewable in Photoshop, Lightroom, or any color-managed browser workflow.
What mounting and backing options are available for oversized work?
Standard prints ship flat between acid-free boards. Oversized editions (over 40″) are mounted on 3mm Dibond or 6mm aluminum with a sub-frame cleat. We do not offer stretcher-bar mounting for photographs — it is the wrong substrate for the medium.
Can you number and sign limited editions on our behalf?
Yes. We hand-number and blind-stamp every limited edition in pencil, ink, or archival marker, and arrange wet signatures with the photographer on request. A signed certificate of authenticity ships with each numbered piece.
What is the rush turnaround, and what does it cost?
Rush is 2 business days for unframed prints and 5 days for framed editions, at a 35% surcharge on the print and framing subtotal. Same-week turnaround for editorial deadlines is available on case-by-case approval — write to the studio inbox before placing the order.
Do you ship internationally, and how are duties handled?
We ship to 41 countries. Duties and import VAT are calculated and collected at checkout for the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan — DDP terms, no surprise customs bills on delivery. For all other destinations, DDU terms apply and the receiver pays the carrier on delivery.
